SEND & Inclusion – An Update from our SEND Team
We continue to be pleased and very proud of the hard work and resilience shown by our children who need additional support and adjustment in school in order to thrive academically and emotionally. Not only is this reflected in the exceptional progress our SEN children make throughout the school, we wanted to share how delighted we were at the end of last academic year to receive an exceptionally positive report from the Local Authority following a whole school SEND Review. All schools in the Locality receive a full day visit where provision of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) is scrutinised. The Summary Comment from the Local Authority Report published following their visit states “There is a strong sense of team and shared purpose amongst the Hambrook staff with regard to inclusive practice. The staff team hold themselves to account and have high joint and individual standards when it comes to inclusion. There is good dissemination of skills across the staff team for supporting pupils with SEND and a shared sense of responsibility for ensuring good outcomes for these pupils”. It goes on to describe Hambrook’s passion for inclusion and how we have clear aspirations for our children with additional needs to fulfil their potential and how this is reflected in Hambrook’s extremely strong SEN attainment in comparison to other schools in the local authority and nationally. We could not be prouder of the dedication shown by all our staff in supporting our children with SEN – not to mention the incredible hard work by the children! The report details the exceptionally calm and high quality learning environment for all pupils here at Hambrook and remarks upon our clear commitment to create independent learners across the school. So positive was the feedback from the Local Authority that it also describes our work as ground breaking and ‘putting Hambrook in the spotlight both locally and potentially nationally’.
In order to continue to ensure that parents are aware of the excellent SEN provision we offer, not just through the daily practice recognised in the Local Authority Review, but also through the wealth of interventions delivered beyond the classroom, the SEND Team will be reaching out to all parents later in the new term with an invitation to join a SEND Parent Working Group. This Group will be lead by Mrs Pitman (Inclusion Lead) and Mrs Yeo (SENDco) and our intention will be to showcase our current provision with a view to giving parents the opportunity to offer feedback and support to enable the SEN Team to share and continue the outstanding practice recognised by the Local Authority. The invite will be extended to all parents and it is hoped that parents of those children with and without special educational needs will take the opportunity to join our initiative.

This year we are introducing Stay and Read and Stay and Calculate. These are new opportunities for parents/carers/relatives to come into school to read with your child or complete some mathematics. This is a great opportunity to see the work that goes on in our classrooms and learn the strategies we teach for reading and mathematics.

Communication with school
At Hambrook, we believe that a close and trusting relationship between home and school is integral for the success and happiness of our children. We offer a number of ways for parents/carers and staff to communicate these include:
- Parents evenings twice a year (November and March) with a written copy of assessments and interventions provided.
- A written report in July.
- Teaching staff are in the playground every day after school for informal conversations or quick questions.
- Our Headteacher (Mrs. Rubel) and Inclusion Leader (Mrs. Pitman) are on the gate every morning for any questions or informal discussions.
- Our School Office is open from 8.30-4.30pm every day for queries relating to dinner money etc.
- Parents/carers can email questions to us. Please note that emails are responded to in priority order not the order emails are received in. This ensures we deal with the most urgent needs first e.g. safeguarding. We aim to reply to all emails within 5 days, however during busy times this may take longer.
- Parents/carers are able to book individual meetings with our staff (including our SENDCo) by contacting the office.
At all times we ask all parents and carers to follow our Parent Code of Conduct which can be found here.

Meditation Lessons
At Hambrook Primary School we are deeply committed to the wellbeing of our children. One way we seek to improve our children's wellbeing and lifelong welling is through our meditation lessons. We are extremely lucky at Hambrook to have Mrs. Bassett-Lowe on our teaching team. As well as being a fantastic teacher she is also a qualified meditation teacher.
Each term Mrs Bassett-Lowe teaches two classes meditation lessons. Please see the timetable below for the terms each class will be working with Mrs. Bassett-Lowe.
To support parents' understanding of these sessions we will be holding a Parents/Carers Meditation Session on Thursday 28th September 8.50am-9.30am in our school hall. During this session Mrs Bassett-Lowe will lead a meditation session for you, very similar to the lessons our children enjoy. If you would like to attend please come into the office and fill in the sign-up sheet or email the office to request a place. It would be lovely to see as many parents/carers as possible at the session.
